Marijuana Talk Kit

“When I was a kid…” doesn’t really work when talking with your kids about marijuana today. It’s a whole new ballgame.
Marijuana — legal or otherwise — is a hot topic. It’s more important than ever for parents and caregivers to protect their kids’ health and development by addressing this issue early and often. This talk kit helps families navigate through a changing marijuana landscape; one that includes legalization, the rise in edibles and vaping. Believe it or not, you are the most powerful influence in your child’s life. More than friends. More than social media. More than influencers.

What is the Youth Marijuana Prevention Campaign?

Linn Together, as part of the Linn County Marijuana Task Force, supports the Youth Marijuana Prevention Campaign. The campaign is a collaboration between Linn Together, Linn County Alcohol and Drug, the Linn County Juvenile Department, and the Linn County Sheriff’s Office.

The campaign is focused on middle school students and their parents and utilizes gaming, sports, and social media images. The campaign’s goal is to inform about the risks of youth marijuana use. There are three themes: Control, Reach & Protect. Each theme highlights the benefits of not using marijuana as well as the negative impacts of using marijuana.

Did you know that parental disapproval of youth alcohol and other drug use has a major influence on kids’ decisions around substance use?  In Linn County, 89% of 8th graders and 81% of 11th graders indicate that their parents would disapprove of marijuana use (Oregon Student Health Survey, Linn County, 2022).  Parental influence plays a crucial role in shaping attitudes and behaviors.

Perception of harm also influences youth’s decisions.  If a teen understands the risks related to substance use, they are less likely to try it.  In Linn County, only 52 of 8th and 11th-grade students perceive regular marijuana use as risky.

By engaging in open conversations about the realities and consequences of substance use, parents can help shift these perceptions and empower their teens to make healthy choices. We invite you to explore the resources available through Linn Together to support these important conversations in your family.

The Youth Marijuana Prevention Campaign includes posters, rack cards, social media advertising, as well as themed give-a-ways such as stickers and shoe laces. In addition, information about how marijuana can impact brain health, mental health and school success is available at linntogether.org. The high school students of the STAND Youth Council help to promote the campaign in Linn County middle schools.
