Marijuana Talk Kit

“When I was a kid” doesn’t really work when talking with your kids about marijuana today. It’s a whole new ballgame.
Marijuana — legal or otherwise — is a hot topic. It’s more important than ever for parents and caregivers to protect their kids’ health and development by addressing this issue early and often.

This Marijuana Talk Kit helps families navigate through a changing marijuana landscape; one that includes legalization, the rise in edibles and vaping. Believe it or not, you are the most powerful influence in your child’s life. More than friends. More than social media. More than influencers.

What is the Youth Marijuana Prevention Campaign?

Linn Together, in collaboration with the Linn County Marijuana Task Force, supports the Youth Marijuana Prevention Campaign. The campaign is a joint effort by Linn Together, Linn County Alcohol and Drug Program, the Linn County Juvenile Department, and the Linn County Sheriff’s Office.

Who It’s For

The campaign is designed for middle school students and their parents, using engaging visuals from gaming, sports, and social media to capture attention and start meaningful conversations.

Campaign Themes

There are three main themes:

  • Control – Empowering youth to stay in charge of their future.
  • Reach – Encouraging young people to reach their goals.
  • Protect – Promoting smart choices that protect brain health and overall well-being.

Each theme highlights both the benefits of not using marijuana and the potential negative effects of use on brain development, mental health, and school success.

Why It Matters

Parental influence is one of the most powerful tools in preventing youth substance use. In Linn County, 89% of 8th grade students and 81% of 11th graders say their parents disapprove of youth marijuana use. (Oregon Student Health Survey, Linn County, 2022)

Perception of harm also plays a key role. When teens understand the risks, they’re less likely to try marijuana. However, only 52% of Linn County students in 8th and 11th grade view regular marijuana use as risky.

By starting open, honest conversations at home, parents can shape their child’s choices and how youth marijuana use is perceived.

Campaign Materials & Outreach

The campaign includes:

  • Posters and rack cards
  • Social media advertising
  • Themed giveaways like stickers and shoelaces
