Linn Together, your local community coalition for healthy youth choices, has been active for more than 20 years. From the beginning, we’ve worked to help parents find ways to keep kids safe from alcohol.

Not only are youth that drink more likely to experience school problems, social problems, physical, and emotional problems — drinking alcohol at a young age is also linked to an increased risk of developing alcohol use disorder later in life.

How to Keep Your Kids Safe From Alcohol
If you have alcohol in your home, keep track of it. Know how much you have. If possible, keep alcohol locked in a closet, cabinet, safe, or other locked location. Get rid of alcohol during times that your kids will be home alone. Don’t ask children to get you alcohol from the fridge.

Talk About Alcohol
Set clear rules and expectations about not drinking alcohol. Talk to the parents of your kids’ friends and let them know you do not let your children drink alcohol. Tell family members over age 21 not to supply alcohol to your children or anyone under age 21.

Host Social Events Responsibly
Never serve alcohol to anyone under age 21, and don’t allow children to serve alcohol to others.Don’t serve or bring alcohol to kid-centered celebrations (sporting events, birthdays, graduations, etc).Don’t host parties where only alcoholic beverages are served or where drinking is the central focus of the gathering.

Monitor Your Kids
Monitor your kids’ activities: Ask “Who? What? When? Where?”Get to know your kids’ friends and their parents. Make sure that other parents are providing a safe environment for your kids.Check it out! Find out if there will be adult supervision at your kids’ activities
